Block iliac bone grafting enhances osseous healing of alveolar reconstruction in older cleft patients: A radiological and histological evaluation

2018

Background Older alveolar cleft patients (&12 years old) often have wide bone defect as well as teeth loss, resulting in poor osseous healing with conventional alveolar bone grafting (ABG). In this study, we investigated a surgical technique of block iliac bone grafting for the alveolar cleft reconstruction and evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of these cleft patients. Material and Methods Fifteen patients were included in this study. All cases received preoperative cone bean computed tomography (CBCT) scans for the alveolar cleft evaluation. Osseous outcomes of block iliac bone grafting were assessed at 1 week, 3- and 6-month postoperatively. Volume changes and bone resorpti…

Immunohistochemical characteristics of the Implant-Hosted Bon : preliminary findings of 9 mandibular cores

2010

Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate the biochemical topography of collagen types I and III and to describe the histological structure at the implant placement site to determine the clinical significance of the findings and their possible interaction with bone healing around dental implants. Material and Methods: Bone cores from 9 mandibles were taken from the site of placement of dental implants. The reliable technique for rapid preparation of fresh-frozen undecalcified bone sections and the indirect immunofluorescent technique as an immunohistochemical procedure were applied. All sections were viewed under U.V light. For comparative purposes the tissue blocks remaining w…

Vertical Bone Augmentation with Simultaneous Dental Implantation Using Crestal Biomaterial Rings: A Rabbit Animal Study

2011

Background: Ceramic biomaterial blocks like hydroxyl apatite are too brittle for simple simultaneous vertical augmentation and dental implant placement. Biological scaffolds of xenogenic or allogenic origin are known to be advantageous. Purpose: The aim of this study was the proof of principle for combined vertical bone augmentation and dental implantation with marginal cuffs made of biological scaffolds with interconnecting porous system and titanium dental implants. Materials and Methods: Cylindrical porcine biomaterial rings (processed, mineralized bone matrix) were placed in combination with titanium dental implants in the tibia model using six chinchilla bastard rabbits (n = 12 samples…

Maxillofacial reconstruction in a pediatric patient with Osteosarcoma

2011

Osteosarcoma is a bone tumor that consists of malignant cells that produce immature bone. Is a bone tumor that develops during periods of rapid growth in adolescents and young adults. It is the most common type of bone cancer in children and adolescents. The diagnosis and treatment of patients with osteosarcoma requires a multidisciplinary team approach. Resection of maxillary tumours remains a surgical challenge due to the possible aesthetic and functional secuelae. We present herein the case of a 15 year-old female with an osteoblastic osteosarcoma of the left maxilla. It was treated with eight cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by a total left maxillectomy. Resection was perfor…

Irradiation Delays Tissue Growth but Enhances Osteogenic Differentiation in Vascularized Constructs.

2018

Background Regenerative medicine is still deficient in the reconstruction after cancer due to impaired vascularization after radiotherapy and due to the need to substitute larger defects after tumor excision. Aiming at introducing regenerative medicine for reconstruction after cancer, we tested an axially vascularized bone construct in an experimental setting that mimics the clinical situation after tumor resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. Methods Twenty bone constructs were axially vascularized using microsurgically created arteriovenous loops and were implanted subcutaneously in Lewis rats. After 2 weeks, the animals were randomly allocated either to receive a clinically relevant singl…
